The Newark Teachers Union COPE department, under the chairmanship of John Alvino, is responsible for getting the word out to members about the political arena and how it may impact education.
John Alvino is responsible for building a political structure that can communicate the NTU’s educational goals and objectives through legislation, by working directly with government officials at local, state and national levels, & by organizing effective campaigns.
Recent COPE activities have included organizing the membership of the Newark Teachers Union and the State Federation of Teachers in support of candidates for positions involving mayoral, state legislature, congressional, gubernatorial and Presidential.
Other COPE initiatives have included organizing membership for legislative referenda related to school vouchers, school financing, health issues & the ability of NTU members to maximize their political clout.
