Introduction to Web Page - Preventing & Addressing Challenging Behavior

With this web page. the Newark Teachers Union (NTU), the Newark Public Schools (NPS), and the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network have continued and expanded our collaboration. The CD contains a comprehensive set of information, tools, and resources that parents, educators, administrators, and students can use to strengthen student pro-social and positive decision-making skills and prevent or minimize student challenging behavior.  In addition to strategies to improve individual student behavior, this CD provides assistance in developing schoolwide positive behavior supports that have proven effective in schools and districts across the country.

To start your learning journey, click on the webpage titled, “How to Prevent and Address Challenging Behavior.”  You will see a graphic that includes the following subsections:

  •  IDEA’s Legal Mandates

  • New Jersey's Regulatory Mandates, which Includes Discipline Policies

  • Positive Behavioral Supports or Behavioral Intervention Plans

  •  Assessment/Functional Behavior Assessment

  • Core Curriculum Content Standards

  • Publication

  • Administrative Involvement

  • Parental Involvement

  • Student Involvement

  • Effective Teachers

Clicking on any of these “bubbles” will take you into the hyperlinked sections that will give you an overview of each topic as well as specific strategies and forms to use when working with individual students.  As you enter each substantive area, you will see additional hyperlinked sections that go into more detail or connect you with forms or examples relevant to that section.

For best results, please be sure to review all of the “bubble” sections.  Each of these components is critical to preventing and/or addressing student challenging behavior and helping students to develop more pro-social skills and increase time on task – and thus learning and achievement.

In addition, towards the left hand bottom of the web page, we have provided a search engine for you to access the resources another way. Just type in the words, or terms of interest, click "search" and the search engine will take you to multiple hyperlinked resources for you to explore, or select.
