Dear Newark Teachers, Aides and Clerks,
Needless to say, this past summer has been a war zone in Newark. Unfortunately, the status quo in respect to crime prevention continues.
Enclosed is a copy of a press release we issued on August 30, 2007. Your Executive Board wants action to ensure your safety and the safety of your students. We certainly don't want to break last years record number of killings, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent it from happening. We will not rest until Newark's murder rate declines. Our students are being traumatized by what's occurring in Newark's streets.
We have met with legislators demanding state intervention with financial resources and manpower. The status quo is not working. Positive changes hopefully will come.
I have enclosed a very important policy of the Newark Public Schools which should be followed by every building for the purpose of protecting all staff, students and Board property. In the event the policy is not being followed, please have your building rep or building committee notify me, and I will inform the administrators in your building of the necessity of compliance.
In Solidarity, Joseph Del Grosso President

With the passing of Chapter 103, PL 2007, there have been some significant changes with the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP). This was not a negotiated change, this was done legislatively by the state of New Jersey. Our negotiated contract is still in place, and you will continue to contribute nothing for you and your family’s health benefits for the duration of the current agreement.
