New Teachers

The Newark Teachers Union is firmly committed to supporting all its members, especially New Teachers. Rather then reinvent the wheel, the NTU has reviewed the available research and trends and consolidated in one convenient location professional resources for New Teachers.

All New Teachers face a demanding and challenging career in education today. Research and experience have demonstrated that on-going, personal support by veteran, resident master teachers and homegrown technology initiatives, such as Teachscape, make the difference in helping New Teachers delivering quality instruction and effective classroom management.

Resources have been collated from the US Department of Education, NJ State Department of Education, private organizations such as Recruiting New Teachers, Quality Education, National Clearinghouse and an assortment of local information and flavor. Click here to submit a New Teacher resource, which you have found invaluable and would like to share with your colleagues.

Each school year the Newark Teachers Union and Newark Public Schools provide a variety of services for its New Teachers- some individually, while others via a partnership. During New Teacher Orientation, which is scheduled for August 31 and September 1, 2005 this school year, the NTU will preview the important role of the union, provide helpful tips for teachers, answer questions about benefits and salary, getting to know your Building Rep, etc.

The NTU is very proud of its Professional Development Department and Educational Resource Center, which work very closely with Newark’s New Teachers. The Professional Development Department provides many valuable services throughout the school year for all teachers, especially in the beginning of the year workshops such as Classroom Management and Starting Off on the Right Track. These courses are given at the NTU Headquarters under the direction of Michele Corbo, Director.

The ERC is located on the 4th floor of the NTU and houses a wealth of supplies, equipment, and services for classroom needs. There is free parking adjacent to the NTU with a stamped ticket. The ERC is open during late summer in preparation for the new school year beginning August 15 thru September1. During the regular school year, it is open from 3:30 to 5:30PM every Monday thru Thursday. There are laminating and wax machines, poster printer, Ellison dyes, bookbinding, copying and transparencies, instructional collections and more. The ERC also houses a computer lab, which is available for NTU members. During the year, courses are given for professional development as well as by popular requests.

In the New Teacher section, you will also find a variety of motivating and inspiring passages and professional links, which are intended as a survival toolkit for New Teachers. There are links to professional resources for first year teachers, personal experiences and revelations of why teachers teach, what students say about their teachers, teaching resources, beginning teaching, classroom tips and resources, staying motivated, growing professionally, references, web sites, finding and keeping successful teachers, and cancellation/deferment loan options for teachers.
